Mercedes Benz adopts a new nomenclature

Mercedes Benz announced a new name for its current product portfolio. Almost everything beyond the core a -, B -, C -, e - and s-levels is changing, including ml, GLK, GL and SLK.

Under the new system, the model will be centered around the brand's five traditional letter names - A, B, C, e and s, representing its size and positioning. All SUVs and crossovers will carry the prefix "GL", followed by letters aligned with the core car model. Therefore, the lineup will now include GL "a", GL "C" (formerly GLK), GL "e" (formerly M / ml) and GL "s" (formerly GL). The four door coupe will receive the prefix "CL", so the CLA and CLS remain unaffected. Roadsters will include the "SL" prefix, so SLK is now SLC. Although class G SUVs and sl-class roadster are an exception in this new system, they will continue to use the same name due to their iconic status. The "4matic" label for all wheel drive vehicles also remains unchanged.

In addition to the name, Mercedes Benz is also modifying the near model and powertrain. The new lowercase letters will now be natural gas (compressed gas) engines - 'C', diesel "d", "e" fuel cell electrical, 'f', and hybrid "H". Numerical suffixes that directly reference engine dimensions will be saved over the years and will continue to correspond to relative dimensions and power.

Although these changes are not as dramatic as Infiniti and Cadillac, the new name seems more logical and transparent than ever before. According to the company, the new nomenclature will begin to be launched together with the M-class and GL class faced next year.

Speaking of changes, Daimler AG, head, brand communications, Mercedes Benz, Dr Jens thiemer said, "After more than 20 years of continuity, involving some of the most recognized and successful product names in the world, we are now making our vehicle naming system more understandable. Bearing in mind the international appeal of our brand, our plan has been to design a simpler, more transparent and more reasonable system for the designation of our model series, with the purpose of providing customers with a clear direction.
