German new car registrations fell 10.2% year-on-year in May, backlog of orders hit record high

According to foreign media reports, the backlog of new car orders in Germany hit a record high, but automakers were unable to meet market demand due to a shortage of parts.

According to the German Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA), new car registrations in Germany fell 10.2% year-on-year to 207,199 in May, the lowest level since May 2020.In the first five months of this year, new car registrations in Germany fell 9.3% year-on-year to 1.01 million.

From the perspective of brands, Polestar, Dacia and Mercedes-Benz all achieved higher growth in Germany in May.Among them, Polestar's monthly registrations increased by 154% year-on-year to 460 units; Dacia's registrations increased by 37.7% to 3,620 units; Mercedes-Benz's registrations increased by 23.4% year-on-year to 18,008 units.In addition, Opel's registrations rose 5.5% year-on-year to 13,057 units; Ford's registrations rose 4.5% year-on-year to 12,153 units.

At the same time, sales also fell as some automakers had to reduceproductiondue to shortages of auto chips and other components .Among them, Tesla's registration in Germany in May fell 89% year-on-year to 293; Volkswagen brand registration fell 14.3% to 38,782; BMW registration fell 13% to 17,158, while Audi registration fell 12.3% to 16,287.

Last month, German BEVregistrationsrose 8.9% year-on-year and gained a 14.1% market share, while plug-in hybrid registrations fell 15% year-on-year to an 11.2% market share.

Reinhard Zirpel, president of the German Association of International Automobile Manufacturers (VDIK), said the decline in the German market was becoming more pronounced due to large-scale challenges in the supply chain."However, the backlog of new car orders is at an all-time high. This shows that consumers want to buy a car, but the industry has limited deliveries."
