TeslaInc has closed a California facility and laid off about 200 employees from its Autopilot team, people familiar with the matter said.

It was the largest known widespread layoff in the tech industry.

The laid-off employees, who were notified on Tuesday, are part of a team in the San Mateo office that evaluates customer vehicle data related to Autopilot’s assisted driving features and performs so-called data tagging, people familiar with the matter said.

It is reported that Tesla CEO Elon Musk just made a public speech at the Qatar Economic Forum not long ago, he said that the US economic recession is inevitable at some point.

As a result, Tesla has decided to reduce its full-paid staff by 10% over the next three months, as overtime is generally not acceptable among U.S. workers.

But the hope is to add some hourly casual workers, which may increase car production while also reducing employee costs.

However, because the layoffs are progressing too fast, a number of laid-off employees have previously filed a class action lawsuit against Tesla, accusing Tesla of failing to notify layoffs 60 days in advance in accordance with labor laws.
