While presenting its Hydrogen Vision 2040 product strategy and Hydrogen Wave product for heavy commercial trucks at the Munich Motor Show today,Hyundaialso mentioned another vision of its fuel cell technology: the 671-horsepower Vision FK sports car.
Of particular interest, the Vision FK is being developed with Rimac and will use Rimac's battery packs in applications expected to yield a range of 373 miles.Expect to go from zero to 62 mph in under 4 seconds.Knowing the Rimac and the horsepower promised here, that's probably a conservative estimate.
Hyundaialso released images of its camouflaged test vehicle, the Concept FK.Interestingly,Hyundaisays the Vision/Concept FK powertrain will be a technology twin: a fuel cell system will drive the front wheels, while a more traditional battery-electric setup - presumably using Rimac components - will drive the rear wheels.
"We absolutely believe we're on the right track and we can't survive on battery technology alone. That's our firm belief," Hyundai Chief Marketing Officer Thomas Schemera said in the automaker's presentation.
Hyundai's strategy is also on a dual track.Like Toyota, Hyundai remains skeptical of a future consisting entirely of electric vehicles. As such, it has released the Kona EV and Kia De Niro EV in the automotive class, and has converted EV models coming along the pipeline. At the same time, it is still pouring R&D dollars into hydrogen fuel cell vehicles like the Nexo and now the Vision FK.It will continue this two-pronged approach as the internal combustion engine is phased out, and by 2035 the company says it will only offer electric models in Europe.By 2040, as mentioned in the title of the strategy, the internal combustion engine will completely disappear.
