2022 Subaru BRZ trades 2 mpg for 23 hp

Subaru's second-generation BRZ debuted in late 2020 with a bigger engine than its predecessor.It delivers more power, which enthusiasts have been calling for for years, but its fuel economy figures aren't significantly worse.

In its most efficient configuration, with the optional six-speed automatic transmission, the 2022 BRZ gets 21 mpg in the city and 30 mpg on the highway, according to the Environmental Protection Agency up to 25 mpg.Sticking with the standard six-speed stick brings those numbers down to 20, 27 and 23, respectively.

For context, the original models were released as 24, 33 and 27 with a six-speed automatic transmission, meaning the BRZ lost a few miles per gallon going into its second generation.The previous-generation Shift model earned 21 mpg city, 29 mpg highway, and 24 mpg combined.Note that premium gasoline is required for each variant.

In exchange, fans have 23 additional horses to play with.Power for the new BRZ comes from a 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine rated at 228 horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque.The previous BRZ's 2.0-liter four-cylinder produced 205 horsepower and 156 pound-feet of torque.The engine is still naturally aspirated; adding a turbo is not an option.

Fuel economy figures for the second-generation Toyota 86 have not yet been released.They should be very close (if not identical) to the numbers for the new BRZ.The two cars are almost identical under the sheet metal.

Subaru dealers everywhere will begin receiving the new BRZ in the fall of 2021.The Premium model with the six-speed manual starts at $28,955, including destination charges.A more upscale limited edition costs $31,411.Subaru will charge premium buyers an automatic fee of $1,600.Price for the Limited is set at $1,800 as it includes additional driver aids like reverse automatic braking and the EyeSight technology package.
