On July 8, according to Gasgoo, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) said on July 7 that it has launched a special investigation into the recent collision of a Cruise self-driving car in California, which caused a car accident. Insiders suffered minor injuries.

Cruise's report to the California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) shows that a Cruise vehicle operating in driverless mode was involved in a crash in San Francisco on June 3.The DMV said it had spoken to Cruise executives about the incident.

Cruise, the self-driving car maker controlled by General Motors, said it was not subpoenaed by police following the incident.Cruise said the company has provided NHTSA with "regular information" requested in the special accident investigation.

NHTSA's special crash investigation is separate from the defect investigation used to determine whether vehicles should be recalled. The agency has yet to open a flaw investigation into Cruise.

In an accident report filed on June 3, Cruise said its vehicle entered the left-turn lane and signaled a turn, then initiated a left turn at the green light.Meanwhile, a 2016 Toyota Prius approached the intersection from the opposite right-turn lane at about 40 mph, where the speed limit is 25 mph.

After entering the intersection, the Prius hit the rear right of the Cruise self-driving car, which then stopped before completing the turn and was later towed away from the scene. The occupants of both vehicles suffered minor injuries and received medical treatment, Cruise said.

Cruise overcame objections from local officials earlier in June and began offering a paid driverless ride-hailing service in San Francisco on June 23, becoming the first local business to receive a paid-for self-driving ride-hailing license.

Self-driving test cars with human safety drivers have become the norm in San Francisco, and fully driverless test cars are increasingly common. In this major U.S. city, turning driverless cars into a real business marks a new milestone for driverless taxi services.
