Silicon carbide is regarded as the technology of choice for power electronics due to its excellent performance in high temperature and high pressure environments, enabling smaller, lighter and more efficient solutions. Therefore, the material is especially suitable for inverters (converting direct current from a battery to alternating current for electric vehicle motors). In addition to this, Marelli's new 800V inverter platform features an optimized thermal structure, thanks to an innovative structure and cooling channel design. These designs greatly reduce the thermal resistance between the SiC component itself and the coolant. In high power applications, the thermal performance of the power module is very important.
As one of the main advantages, this new inverter platform is more efficient and can extract more energy from the battery. This helps to significantly increase the vehicle's range, speed up charging times, and optimize acceleration performance. Finally, smaller and more efficient inverters can reduce battery size, thereby optimizing cost, weight and sustainability.
Dr. Razvan Panati, Head of Power Electronics Technology, AutomotiveElectrificationDivision, Marelli said: "The new inverter platform is based on 800V silicon carbide power module technology and can be used for energy optimization, performance maximization and greatly improved efficiency applications. With a complete set of modular solutions The solution provides customers with greater flexibility in packaging, cooling system design and energy storage.”
The software for all inverters in the Marelli series is developed in-house by the company and controlled by an electronic control unit located in the same inverter housing. The software is AUTOSAR (Automotive Open System Architecture) compliant and tailored specifically to the diagnostic criteria required by car manufacturers.Functional safety requirements meet ASIL D (Automotive Safety Integrity Level D) standards.
