LG Uplus applies U+ ultra-precision positioning technology to autonomous driving and smart ports

According to foreign media reports, South Korean mobile network operator LG Uplus (LG U+) announced that it will expand ultra-precision positioning technology to autonomous driving and smart ports.U+ ultra-precise positioning service is a centimeter-level solution for viewing the location information of mobile terminals, and has been provided to customers from March 2022.

Existing Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) methods, known as GPS, use only satellite information and therefore experience errors of up to tens of meters due to propagation delays when passing through the ionosphere and troposphere.However, the U+ ultra-precise positioning service uses real-time kinematic (RTK) technology, which can achieve centimeter-level calibration.

Last November, LG U+ started building its own reference station at a South Korean telecommunications company.As of the end of June, LG U+ had established a total of 57 reference stations.LG U+ has a total of 132 reference stations, including 75 reference stations of the National Geographic Information Service in Korea. U+ ultra-precise positioning service can cover the whole of Korea.LG U+ plans to expand its services to autonomous driving and smart ports in the third quarter of this year.

ACELAB, which successfully demonstrated 5G autonomous driving on public roads in South Korea for the first time, and Autonomous a2z in the Autonomous Driving Special Zone in Sejong City, South Korea, both adopted the U+ ultra-precise positioning service.LG U+ plans to continuously expand the application of U+ ultra-precision positioning technology and extend it to the autonomous driving technology development innovation project, namely "commercialized technology development of computing platform based on L4-level autonomous driving architecture".

Autonomous driving is directly related to customer safety, so the technology to determine the exact location of the vehicle is very important.The U+ ultra-precise positioning technology enables customers to obtain more accurate positioning by integrating ultra-precise positioning information with vehicle sensor information.
